SFA Chief executive Stewart Regan confirmed the governing body's support for the UEFA president following a meeting of the association’s board. Regan said: "From the perspective of the smaller countries, he has opened up the channels of communication and ensured that every country, irrespective of size, has a voice. That is healthy for the game and if he is prepared to do that across the world, I'm sure he will be well-received. We discussed the FIFA election at our recent board meeting and agreed that the Scottish FA would support Michel Platini’s candidacy."

Platini, who won the Ballon d’Or three times as a player, recently announced his intention to stand in next year’s presidential elections and is thought to have the backing of four of the six FIFA confederations. The former France international was elected as UEFA’s president in 2007, defeating Lennart Johansson who had held the post for the previous 16 years. FIFA has confirmed its elections will take place on February 26, 2016. Platini is favourite to succeed Sepp Blatter, who announced his resignation earlier this year amid allegations of corruption within the sport's world governing body.
