Cowdenbeath 2 Edinburgh City 0

C:WindowsTempphp477C.tmpA first league win for Cowden this campaign thanks to goals from Kris Renton just before half time and Lewis Moore with just a few minutes remaining and while it looks like City might struggle to bridge the gap between Lowland League and League 2 this season. There is also more work to be done by the Fifers who relied on the high ball up to Bulgarian striker and Hearts loanee Nikolay Todorov a bit too much in a match which looked every inch a clash of two teams without a win in the league before this fixture.

With former Cowden Chairman Gordon McDougall and the manager he sacked not long after 'Beath's promotion in 1992, former Hibs and Scotland full back John Brownlie, sitting in the Central Park stand there was a touch of All Our Yesterdays about this game as City made their first visit on Scottish League duty since WW II. A Commemorative Whisky labelled with the two club badges was available from Cowdenbeath FC to mark the occasion of City's first modern era visit to Central Park. However, any bottles secured by punters should maybe be kept safe so a better game than this one can be toasted.

Cowden probably just deserved the three points on the balance of play but with the infrastructure of Central Park continuing to crumble and no sign of a new stadium for the Blue Brazil it's testimony to the 'Beath board and the club's small support that they can keep the club alive as they continue to be the warm up act for Saturday evening Stock Car Racing. Never did Central Park look less deserving of being a Scottish League ground, and that is saying something considering the number of years that football has played second fiddle to motor sport.

Kris Renton got his first goal for the Fife club and his first senior goal in the 34th minute when he out jumped Calum Antell in the City goal to head the home team into a narrow half time lead. As y
ou would expect, the visitors came chasing an equaliser but Gary Glen caught them on the counter attack. He ran through on goal and beat the outrushing Antell only to see his effort come back off the post. Glen was first to the ball and squared it to Lewis Moore who tapped home his second goal in two games with only two minutes left on the clock.

Cowdenbeath travel to Broadwood for a game against Clyde next Saturday 27th August while City are at home to Berwick Rangers, both fixtures in League 2.
