Well Pleased With Signing News

Steven McGarry has agreed to stay at Fir Park until the summer of 2010. This signing is a boost ahead of tonight's game against Hibs. Manager Mark McGhee is hoping Keith Lasley will follow suit after he tied up the likes of Stephen Craigan and Jamie Murphy in recent weeks. McGarry said: "It's exciting times to be at Motherwell and I am delighted to be staying here. We've had a terrific campaign this year and I want to play a part in future seasons. The manager asked me to sign the extension and, given how I feel about the club and the way I've been playing, I had absolutely no hesitations. We had a few bits and pieces to sort out but I am delighted to be a Motherwell player now and for the next few years. I've been reasonably happy with my form this year. Certainly up until Christmas I felt both I and the team were playing some really exciting stuff. I've missed a fair chunk of the last month or so through illness that really knocked me for six. I've fully recovered now though and with this really important run of games coming up, I want to play a part in it and ensure we get the third place I think we deserve."

The former St Mirren striker moved from Ross County in January 2006 when Terry Butcher was in charge but founds first-team chances hard to come by. McGhee was keen to extend McGarry's tay at the club after his impressive form this season. The Motherwell boss said: "
Steven has been excellent this season and his new contract is fully justified given his performances to date. I think he's a very underrated footballer and he will have a big part to play in the run-in and the hunt for that top-three place." McGarry added: "I've been used slightly deeper under the gaffer but that's something that wasn't entirely alien to me. I played in a similar role for a brief spell at County and (former Well boss) Maurice (Malpas) asked me to play there quite a bit too. But the manager has given me that little bit of licence to get forward a bit more. I think you see from the amount of guys we've had signing deals that the boys really want to play for this club and play for the management team. I've already said that it's exciting times at Motherwell and all the boys in the dressing room want to be a part of that."
