The Players Are Revolting

The pressure of heading into Sunday's Tennent's Scottish Cup semi-final would be bad enough for John Collins even without the much publicised discontent in the Easter Road dressing room. Collins is trying to keep internal matters exactly that and focus on the important game at the weekend. Losing to Sunday's opponents last week will not have helped things and may have been the spark that set off the dressing-room revolt. It has been reported that a number of Hibs players are unhappy with their manager's training methods and selection policy, and have made their feelings known to chairman Rod Petrie. But Collins has always claimed that such hallenges were part of life. The former Scotland international was reluctant to discuss details of the situation with his players but assured fans that preparations for the semi-final would be unaffected. He said: "
Sometimes things don't go totally according to plan, that's the nature of football. The only thing that's important as far as I'm concerned, and the players, is to be 100% focused on getting the minds and the bodies right and turning up at Hampden and putting on a show for the fans who will be through in numbers again. We are desperate for a successful semi-final performance."

As an experienced player with a number of clubs, Collins knows that the reports of disharmony would soon die down. He went on: "
I have been in football 19 years so I'm well experienced as a player. It's a weekly occurrence, it has been our football club this week, it will be someone else's next week. Every week is a test, every week you are learning and developing, different challenges come your way. That's what life is all about. Life wouldn't be much fun if everything was smooth and rosy every week. This is what develops managers and players."

Collins had spent part of this week in France checking out players and returned to the media scramble surrounding discontent within his squad. He insists the off-filed activity will have no bearing on his selection for Sunday. But when asked if some players had disappointed him by overstepping the mark in their criticism, he said: "
Maybe, but it's something I don't want to touch on. I'm watching training, watching players in five-a-sides and I pick my team on their performance in the first team and in training. This week will be no different. We don't make changes lightly, anything we do is well thought out, talked through and worked on, so it's just a normal week."
