On A Mission

Cowdenbeath supporters have been encouraged to celebrate Div Two safety at nearby Alloa on Saturday, 15 years on from the last Blue Brazil party at Recreation Park.

At the end of league season 1991/2 the Fifers went to the Recs needing a point to clinch promotion to Division 1 and a crowd of nearly 6,000 saw them draw 0-0 in a match that was featured on BBC Scotland's Sportscene programme.

This weekend the celebrations might not be as vociferous as back in the day but Cowden boss Brian Welsh still wants the Blue Brazil support to turn out and cheer on the team that has clinched Second Division football for another season after coming up a Third Division Champions this time last year.

Speaking on Tuesday Welsh said: "
We have targeted three wins in our last three games against Alloa, Ayr and Brechin to take us onto what we be a very respectable first season points total of 50 in this league and that would be a great way to repay the loyal support who have stuck with us through thick and thin this term. We hope the fans will cheer the guys onto the field and recognise their achievement on Saturday as another season away from the Third is, I feel, something worth toasting. The supporters have had some new places to visit this season and hopefully next season we will be making a serious challenge for the play-offs."

Fifth place is still on for the Fifers this campaign and after more seasons than not struggling at the wrong end of Scottish football there is now a chance Cowdenbeath can stop being mentioned in the same breath as the East Stirlings, Elgins and Montroses of this world.

There is still a chance that Cowdenbeath can rekindle their intense local rivalry with East Fife next term as the New Bayview club are set for the play-offs in Division Three while Berwick Rangers and Ross County seem set join the Blue Brazil in Division Two next season providing day-outs for the travelling Cowden support at either end of the country.
