Scotland Lose To Russia

Scotland's women did not make the best of starts to their World Cup Qualification campaign. They lost 0-4 to Russia last night despite having the majority of play and pressure in the first half. Scotland lost two goals in the first half thanks to goals from Elena Morozova, who capitalised on a defensive mistake after 29 minutes, and Olesya Kurochkina made it two on the stroke of half time. Whilst Scotland continued to try to press for an opening goal in the second half, Kurochkina scored her second when her first shot was superbly parried by Gemma Fay but the Russian scored with the rebound. Scotland wilted as the game went on and Russia consolidated their win with their fourth goal which was a fantastic 25 yard shot from Valentina Savchenkova.

Despite their gallant efforts Scotland coach Anna Signeul said: "The score line did not reflect the performance of the team and I was very pleased with some aspects of Scotland's play tonight, particularly their defensive play. We are developing as a team, give us a little more time and we will be at this level and able to compete with the best in Europe."

Russian coach Yury Bystritskiy said that he had seen a great improvement in Scotland from when they last played in August last year and during periods of the game Russia were seriously worried about the threat from Scotland.
