Soft Touch Hibs

Colin Calderwood shoutingHibs manager and former defender Colin Calderwood will continue to focus on his team's failings after watching the way they were cut open during their 2-1 defeat at Kilmarnock. Ben Gordon twice set up Liam Kelly to score from inside the penalty box as Kilmarnock moved into fifth place in the SPL. The first goal came from an impressive passing move in the ninth minute when Mehdi Taouil played a clever reverse pass inside Hibs right-back Michael Hart to send Gordon down the left wing. The second came in the 43rd minute when Kilmarnock moved the ball from right to left with Gordon again finding the room and composure to pick out Kelly, who finished instantly once more to celebrate his new two-and-a-half-year contract in style. Hibs remain stuck in the quagmire that is the bottom six after suffering five defeats in eight games since Calderwood took over from the sacked John Hughes. The former Nottingham Forest manager is keen to make his team more resilient. Calderwood said: "It looks quite easy to score against us and that's something we've got to look at. It's not as if we're stretched, we've got enough bodies back. It's then the responsibility of those in the areas of the pitch. Both goals came from round about the same area and I think it's the same player. They are not soft goals because they are good goals from their aspect, but it just looked a wee bit too tame."

Calderwood, who lost Sol Bamba to a hamstring strain late in the game, was happier with some of his team's attacking play in the second half. Derek Riordan got them back in the game in the 55th minute with a long-range strike that was spectacular even by his own high standards. But Edwin de Graaf missed a good chance when put through by David Wotherspoon, who started in an attacking role ahead of Colin Nish and Valdas Trakys as Calderwood looked to utilise his running power. And any real chance of an equaliser were hampered when, 10 minutes from time, Liam Miller clipped the heels of Conor Sammon as the Killie striker burst into the box. Following consulting two of his fellow officials, Craig Thomson flashed red card and Hibs were down to 10 men.

But Hibs showed enough threat in the half to convince former manager Mixu Paatelainen they will soon be challenging his Kilmarnock team in the top six. Paatelainen said: "All credit to Hibs, they are a good team. It won't be long before they are back up the league table because they can cause problems to any team. Thankfully we held on. Sometimes we rode our luck but the boys fought hard to win the game. In the second half they had a lot of the ball and pinned us back. We had to change our shape to cope with the players they were pushing forward."
