C:WindowsTempphp57CB.tmpDundee United underlined that they have the bragging rights in the City of Discovery after beating their neighbours for the second time in four days. It was United's Jaroslaw Fojut who grabbed a dramatic winner with just seconds left to play in the 1-0 result of their Scottish League Cup third round tie. United had ran out 4-1 on Sunday but this second derby win in the space of four days was a lot more hard-fought, even though the visitors had to play for more than an hour with 10 men.

Dundee were looking for a first derby win since November 2004 and made a bright start at Tannadice Park, Martin Boyle testing Radoslaw Cierzniak with a curling effort before the United goalkeeper used his foot to block a Luka Tankulic header. Dundee should have taken the lead in the 18th minute when they were awarded a penalty following a clumsy challenge by John Rankin on Paul McGowan. However, Greg Stewart put his spot-kick down the middle and Cierzniak did really well to acrobatically lift up his foot and deflect the ball away. The visitors then lost the services of Boyle, who was dismissed for dragging down Stuart Armstrong as he charged towards goal after playing a neat one-two with Ryan Dow. But Dundee escaped further punishment when Nadir Ciftci hit the crossbar with the subsequent free-kick.

Ciftci was extremely unfortunate once more five minutes after the break, again hitting the crossbar with a superb 25-yard effort which came out of nothing. The hosts were in the ascendancy and Dundee goalkeeper Kyle Letheren then distinguished himself, diving to his left to brilliantly tip an Armstrong volley onto the post. United defender Keith Watson then had a header cleared off the line by Gary Irvine, before Dundee went close at the other end, Paul McGowan putting a clever lob onto the roof of the net. However, with three minutes of stoppage-time having almost elapsed, sub Gary Mackay-Steven sent over a corner and Polish defender Fojut rose highest to head Dundee United into the last eight, where they will be away to Hibs.
