C:WindowsTempphpA90F.tmpA goal in each half saw The Gable Endies take all three points in a result which sees the Blue Brazil seven points adrift at the bottom of League Two once again.

The visitors took the lead in the 31st minute when Michael Bolochoweckyj put the ball into the net after Cowden failed to clear a corner. Stewart Petrie's team then doubled their lead in the 77th minute through Matty Smith.

The home side's only two efforts of the game came courtesy of an effort from Kris Renton which narrowly went past the post and a Shaun Rutherford shot from outside the box which was saved by former Cowden keeper Allan Fleming in the Montrose goal. It was a real step back for 'Beath who managed a 3-1 win at Berwick in their last Saturday game getting  8 of their 12 shots on goal on target. They followed the Shielfield victory up with a 1-1 home draw v high flying Elgin City but the Fifers could not keep the revival going on Saturday 18th March.

With eight league matches left and two make or break games against fellow relegation candidates Clyde to come, the first on Tuesday, and a final match v another candidate for the drop in Edinburgh City, it will now take a minor miracle for Gary Locke's men to close the gap on a revitalised Bully Wee and a capital side who are fighting hard to justify their step up from the Lowland League last May.

Cowdenbeath have only gained four points in the league in the whole of 2017 so far and despite the resignation of the hapless Liam Fox , which made way for Gary Locke's appointment, it seems the damage has been done and now the ex-Raith and Hearts boss must assemble a side capable of winning the two-legged pyramid play off with one from Brora Rangers , Cove Rangers, Buckie Thistle (Highland League) or East Kilbride (Lowland League) likely to stand between Cowden and Lowland League football at the end of the current campaign.

Expectation levels have never been lower at Central Park and judging from social media posts many Blue Brazilians are now resigned to their fate. The pyramid play off final is likely to generate UK-wide interest with a nostalgic name for many from the classified football results in danger of the drop and the Fife club is sure to receive many enquiries from down south on their history defining play off games which will see the 2nd Leg at Central Park, probably on a Sunday afternoon and televised by BBC Alba.
