Glasgow City have announced the signing of Birmingham City forward and Irish international Emily Whelan. The 19-year-old moves to Petershill after appearing 16 times for Darren Carter’s side in the Women’s Super League (WSL) last season. Whelan was a regular feature in the Irish under 17 and under 19 sides before making her senior international debut in 2018, where she has gone on to be capped a further five times. Signed to WSL side Birmingham in 2021, she was previously with League of Ireland side Shelbourne, where she was named U-17 League Player of the Year in 2018.

Whelan said: "I am delighted to have signed with Glasgow. I’m excited to play alongside amazing players and work with incredible staff. I am really looking forward to this new adventure and I can’t wait to get started."

City's Head Coach Eileen Gleeson said: "I’m delighted to welcome Emily to Glasgow City FC. “Having worked with her at the Irish National team and watched her develop within the Irish national league, as well as progress to professional football I have no doubt that Emily will make an impact for Glasgow City and provide plenty of excitement for the fans. Emily is a dynamic striker, always a threat with the ball and always active without the ball. Her signing adds to the exciting line-up of Glasgow City’s attacking summer signings of Desirée Monsiváis, Kinga Kozak and Dilan Bora, and hopefully adds to the list of fan favourites."
