SWPL Playoff Spot Race Intensifies As East Fife Lift Championship Trophy

The Methil side demolished Inverness Caledonian Thistle 8-0 to kick off their title party, including four goals for skipper and league top scorer Teri Skivington, who rounded them off with a sublime chip into the top corner that left the scrabbling Jen Horrocks in the Caley Thistle goal with no chance.  East Fife will return to SWPL2 with the beautiful Championship rosebowl, presented to them by Barclays Managing Director of operational risk, Ben Davis, amid the celebrations at the MGM Timber Bayview stadium.

However, the runners-up spot and playoff place is still very much in the balance, after Stirling University and Falkirk played out a 1-1 draw while Glasgow Girls and Women beat Renfrew Ladies 2-1 to climb into fourth. With just four points between second and fifth in the table and three games to go, it could go all the way to the wire.  At the other end of the table, Morton grabbed a 1-0 win at home against Dryburgh Athletic to move further clear of the bottom two Westdyke and Hutchison Vale, who were beaten by Forfar Farmington and Stenhousemuir respectively. Morton are now ten points clear of Westdyke with only nine left to play for, to secure their Championship status.

In the Barclays Scottish Women’s League One, top three sides Bonnyrigg Rose, Armadale Thistle and Inverurie Locomotive Works all won to keep the title race on a knife edge. Bonnyrigg beat Dunipace 4-2 at home while Aramadale handled a tricky trip to Dumfries to face Queen of the South well, running out 5-2 winners. Inverurie Locos resisted a St Mirren fightback to beat the Buddies 2-1 at home.

Giffnock grabbed a vital point against Airdrie in a 2-2 draw, effectively relegating Dundee West, whose 3-1 loss to Edinburgh Caledonia puts them ten points behind with only nine to play for. However the draw also means Giffnock cannot now catch Airdrie Ladies and will face the winners of SWFL South in the relegation playoffs to try and retain their place in the national leagues.
