For 74 minutes it looked as though Queen’s Park would take their unbeaten start of the season to four games and eliminate Second Divison Forfar from the Alba Cup. The Angus side rallied and managed somehow to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat.
The home side started the game well and were unfortunate no one could get on to the excellent crosses coming in from wide men on both sides. It was therefore no surprise it was a cross that led to the opener in 31 minutes. It was Ian Watt whose head deflected a Tony Quinn cross past the stranded Euan McLean.
Queens took the one goal lead into the break and no one could’ve complained about that. The second half started the same way with the Spiders throwing cross after cross but with no takers.
They looked to have sealed the tie with 20 minutes left, Watt cut in off the left and his shot rattled off the cross bar before the rebound found Martin McBride who forced home from about 12 yards out.
Forfar dug in and pulled one back only four minutes later when Chris Templeman rose to head home a Martyn Fotheringham corner. Unbelievably, they were level two minutes later, this time Fotheringham’s cross was swept hime by sub Brian Deasley.
Things were made more difficult for the visitors with just over five minutes left when they were reduced to ten men. Ian Campbell receiving his second yellow for a foul on David Murray.
The game moved into extra time and it took the Loons only four minutes to take the lead for the first time. Barry Sellars right foot edge from the corner of the box left Adam Strain grasping at thin air.
This was enough to see Forfar progress, although the result was hard luck on an impressive Queen’s Park who played some excellent football throughout.
Winning Manager Dick Campbell said after the game: "Queen’s Park were the better side for 90 minutes but we defended resolutely in extra time. I have just told Gardiner Speirs that we had mugged them."
Queen’s Boss Speirs said: "We should have been able to see it out from two goals up, we should’ve scored more and we only have ourselves to blame. We knew they were dangerous from set plays and we lost goals from three set plays."
