Drizzle in Dumfries. What a way to welcome back Scottish fitba in the summer. The weather may have improved as the Alba Cup first round game between Queen of the South and Albion Rovers progressed but the football was not of the most entertaining and did not improve during the first half at least. Things were looking like it would be a good start to the season when first Queens threatened a goal and straight after Albion nearly broke the deadlock within the first ten minutes. Unfortunately, the game was not the best in the world to start a new season with but 1,151 souls did find their way to Palmerston Park for the game. In the end it was a Paul Burns' goal in the 73rd-minute which ensured the final score was 2-1 for the home side.
![]() Ryan McGuffie opens the scoring Paul McLeod was twice foiled by Doonhamers keeper Lee Robinson as Albion made a positive start against their First Division opponents. David Weatherston was denied by Derek Gaston at the other end, however, from the resulting corner, Ryan McGuffie headed home William McLaren's cross to give the hosts a 17th-minute lead. The visitors levelled three minutes after the break when Ciaran Donnelly collected Robert Love's pass on the edge of the area and blasted the ball into the top corner of the goal. Queen of the South regained the lead 17 minutes from time though when Daniel Carmichael's cross found Burns and the midfielder smashed the ball home from close range. ![]() Despite being outnumbered nine to one, Paul Burns makes it two one Carmichael, who came on as a second half substitute, is a player to look out for. With confidence in his own ability and fleetness of foot he was a thorn on the left hand side of the Albion defence. Easy man of the match despite being only on for less than 45 minutes. I think that, along with me checking my watch several times during the game hoping it was near the end, may tell just how dour the game was. |
