Arbroath's Paul Sheerin headed in an early corner but Dunfermline soon levelled when Kirk headed home a cross.
The Red Lichties had lost 1-0 at East End Park in the ALBA Cup the previous Saturday but this was a much more free-flowing affair than the match 7 days earlier and the Gayfield outift certainly proved a first half handful for a Pars side who have been disappointing in pre-season friendlies.
Paul Willis made the breakthrough to make it 2-1 in the 74th minute and Kirk volleyed in a fine Joe Cardle cross moments later. Suddenly, the Pars were looking more like a side who could challenge for an SPL place in 2010-11.
Steven McDougall's strike made it four before Gavin Swankie pulled one back from 20 yards, then Stuart Malcolm diverted a cross into his own net with virtually the last kick of an entertaining game.
