Celtic are out to test the waters on pay per view TV and are starting off in a low key way.
It looks as if there will be some Scottish football on television in the near future. While it may not be to everyone's taste, one half of the Old Firm are sticking their toe in the water of pay-per-view games. Celtic have announced that a new digital channel will screen some of their pre-season and European games. Celtic are piloting screening games on a digital channel in association with Setanta Sport to subscribers in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. I have not been able to find the numbers that subscribe to the service but I presume it is worth Celtic's while to test this option out. The premiere game will be the pre-season friendly game against Parma at Celtic Park on July 27.
The only game in town?
While this move may appear at odds with the recent out break of peace among the SPL side regarding TV options an SPL spokesman said: "Clubs are at liberty to maximise revenues independently in friendlies and other competitions. Discussions are still ongoing regarding the SPL and revenue shares in this are not applicable." In other words this will not affect the negotiations for a TV deal for Scottish football. You will remember that the only offer on the table is from BBC Scotland. The SPL refuse to discuss the situation in details until the deal has been agreed by all parties. In view of the near catastrophic debacle of the last time the SPL clubs talked about TV deals, I am not in the least surprised that the SPL want to keep it quiet till the deal is signed sealed and delivered..
