The Secret Is In The Packaging

Aberdeen are planning to offer Russell Anderson a new deal in an attempt to stop the club captain moving to England. Although Anderson has 12 months left on his present contract, manager Jimmy Calderwood is keen to fix up an extension. Calderwood knows that Aberdeen would be hard pressed to match anything offered by a number of English clubs. However, the Aberdeen boss is hoping the club can come up with a package to keep Anderson, who is in the running for the Player of the Year award, at Pittodrie.

Calderwood said: "
To keep progressing as a club, it is vital to hold on to players of Russell's calibre. But there can be problems, as we have encountered in the past when losing (Markus) Heikkinen and (Kevin) McNaughton. When there is interest in players from England, we cannot match the salaries on offer. We have a wage structure and must live within our budget. You must be prepared for the worst-case scenario if he did decide to leave, but at the moment we're a long way away from that. One of the first tasks is to re-sign Russell, but the priority at the moment is to sort out the new players to strengthen the squad for next season."
