The Return Of The Goalie

Written by Ed_ScottishFitba
Wednesday, 17th July 2002
Morthwell have welcomed home a familiar face with the unforgettable smile. Andy Goram is back to pass on his wisdom or should that be Wisden?

The man is back
The Goalie is back! That’s right, Andy Goram is about to return to one of his many clubs to take up a coaching post. You will remember that Goram spent a year with Motherwell before he answered the desperation call from Manchester United. He has not been turning out much in his football boots recently but has been keeping fit thanks to his prowess on the cricket pitch. Goram is an ex-Scotland internationalist at cricket has been turning out for Uddingston Cricket Club in the Scottish National Premier Division recently. However, as he is not ready to hang up his keeper’s gloves just yet he has agreed to help out Motherwell on a part time basis. Motherwell will be hoping that he can pass on his good habits to goalkeepers Stevie Woods and Francois Dubourdeau. The less said about his bad habits the better.

Goram’s new boss Terry Butcher said: "
Andy is joining the club again in terms of being a goalkeeping coach. We had a goalkeeping coach last year, Jim Stewart, but he left to join Kilmarnock full-time so there was a vacancy here for the job. It's good for Motherwell to have him back at the club. It's a part-time position, because he still wants to play again and he has his cricket as well. But he's a character and he's a winner so I'm hoping that he passes on what he has learned. We're very pleased to have him here. It's on an ad-hoc basis because, in football, you just don't know what's going to happen next. He could be given the opportunity to play for someone else so we will take it week by week."

Butcher is determined to add to his squad ahead of the new campaign and is confident he can attract a couple of new players to the club in the coming weeks. He went on: "
We have one or two irons in the fire and there will definitely be one or two players arriving before the start of the new season." Just how generous will administrator Bryan Jackson be? The wage bill have been trimmed and some money has been coming in but I'll bet Butcher does not have much to offer the new faces.
