SNP leader Alex Salmond MP is looking to secure some votes from football fans by backing a Scottish bid for the 2016 European Championships. He was at yesterday's game with Georgia and set out the SNP's plans in government to meet with a range of stakeholders, including the SFA, to agree a Scottish bid for Euro 2016. Salmond said: "A European Championship on Scottish soil would bring enormous benefits to all of Scotland, and would leave us with a great sporting legacy to pass onto future generations. That's why, if elected in May, I will work in partnership with our sports stakeholders to assess the feasibility of Scotland hosting the 2016 European Championships. Such a study will show us how government, alongside sporting bodies and groups, can move forward to launch a formal bid. All of Scotland would reap the rewards of a European Championship bid, from grassroots sports to improving our infrastructure. That's why as First Minister I want to work together with our sporting community to ensure that we make the most of opportunities such as this flagship football tournament." | |
