JC Goes AWOL

John Collins' stunt double
There was a pat on the back and a "good questions mate" for Scottishfitba.net's correspondent at the post match press conference following the second Scottish Cup semi from Tommy Craig as he finished his stint in front of the media.

However, I wasn't kidding myself on I was on a fast track to journo stardom on the back of recommendations from the Hibs assistant boss.

No, TC was just happy I think somebody was asking him a question or two outside the ball park of probing him on the latest in the John Collins saga.

Craig said he was taking Collins place because the Hibs boss was straight off to meet his family and there was even talk of a possible break abroad for JC before the SPL resumes next weekend.

While the mainstream press were all hovering for a glimpse of body language that might suggest Collins might be leaving Easter Road old stager Craig used all his many years of experience in the game to talk up his manager saying: "
John has made many decisions and some tough decisions in the last five months and he has all the attributes to make Hibs successful."

Still the press probed until Craig tried to come clean saying: "
you guys have a difficult job to do and I would not insult your intelligence but I would ask you to respect what goes on inside Hibs. Like any professional club all personal matters between manager and players are kept in house."

Cue two questions from your website hack: "
So, were the players of April 2007 aware of the 105 years of hurt in the SFA Cup since the last time Hibs won it ?"

Craig was candid: "T
he players know they can be heroes if they bring this cup back to Easter Road. The amount of Hibernian supporters that are still talking about the 5-1 win over Killie is in the hundreds and the amount of Hibs supporters lining up outside the club shop just to hold the League Cup has been amazing and this group of players knows what the Scottish Cup means to Hibs fans. We would feel honoured if we could win it for them, we want very much to see off a very good Dunfermline side in the replay."

And what about the UEFA Cup place that might have been playing on their minds ? Craig said : "
The UEFA Cup place meant it was an incentive to win the game today maybe more than the incentive of facing Champions Celtic in the final. We knew Dunfermline played above themselves to beat us in the SPL last weekend and we knew they'd really fancy their chances today. Stephen Kenny is no mug so both teams were obviously going to play out of their skins with a European place up for grabs for the winners of this game today, it was tense but entertaining for a 0-0 draw."

One more Collins question from the tabloid hacks edging ever closer to the table where Craig sat and TC was off. Five minutes later Stephen Kenny was subdued but quietly satisfied his Pars side had matched a team he obviously rates for the second match running. Kenny said: "
Hibs sparkled against Killie in the League Cup final so a lot of folk thought we could not keep another clean sheet against them this week or win or draw the game but we really dug in today and showed there is more depth to this team than people think. The people of Dunfermline can be proud of their team, we had one player playing here after a recent family bereavement but I shouldn't talk about personal matters here."

Kenny also revealed it was winning the UEFA Cup place that was uppermost in the Pars players minds as they took the pitch against Hibs at Hampden. Ironically Dunfermline's first ever European tie in the early 1960's was a win on aggregate over St Pats from Kenny's homeland of Eire. He said: "
Dunfermline people tell me the team did not do themselves justice in their last UEFA Cup appearance in 2004/5 season and went only one round so we want to give them top class European football at East End Park again for the first time since 1970 is it?"

Correct Stephen, so see you back at Hampden a week on Tuesday and this time the race for Europe between Leith and Fife will be won.
