Bordering On Safety

Last updated : 11 March 2008 By Alex Horsburgh

Former Cowdenbeath boss, Partick Thistle and Celtic goal hero Joe Craig, used to say every time he drove into Cowdenbeath it was raining. Is it a certain Petro-chemical plant spewing high into the air on the outskirts of the Fife town that has been giving the place more rainfall than usual since the early 1980's or is God just a Blue Brazilian who has been experiencing mostly 127 years of hurt since Cowden's formation in 1881?

It is a fact Cowdenbeath have enjoyed more postponements than most sides in the SFL again this season. So far they have only managed to play relegation play-off rivals Queens Park once in the league and they even found the Hampden pitch unable to cope with the weather when they tried to play the Glaswegians at the national stadium on Saturday.

This now sets the self-styled Blue Brazil up for two crucial back to back games against the team that followed them up from Division 3 last season as Champions. Two wins puts the Kingdom club right back in with a chance of surviving another season out of the basement. Two defeats surely puts Berwick straight back down with the faint hope of visiting the last chance saloon of a play-off finally erased.

Cowden's first game in this back to back sequence against the Borderers is at Shielfield on tonight with Central Park, not so much the local Maracana more like Waterworld these days, attempting to host Saturday's game. Six points for Brian Welsh and Co puts the pressure back on QP and surely condemns the Wee Rangers to 3rd Division football next season.

The influential Dougie Hill and Brian Gillfillan could return for the Fifers on Tuesday night after injuries while Berwick boss Michael Renwick goes into these two crunch matches against Cowden with a vote of confidence (not always a positive sign in the eyes of many) from the Shielfield board despite another weekend defeat, this time to Alloa, and a promised budget for players sooner rather than later.

Three Under-19 players started for Cowden in their recent defeat at leaders Ross County and manager Brian Welsh may again trust in youth to dig Cowdenbeath out of the relegation mire. "
It's a cliche but it is true, every game is now a cup final for us" Welsh told the press while disappointed his side didn't have the chance to leapfrog Queens Park in the league at the weekend.

No Cowdenbeath side has survived more than two seasons in a higher league after promotion since the 1930's. Local pride and a chance to make some club history awaits the current crop of Blue Brazilians as Cowden, the 2005/6 3rd Div Champs, take on Berwick, the 2006/7 3rd Division Champions, Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon.
