Aiming To Be The Third Force

Like many a manager before him, Hibs' John Collins has ambitions to challenge the Old Firm's domination of Scottish football. Hearts were the latest club to threaten to drive a wedge between the Glasgow pair, but this season Celtic and Rangers have taken up their familiar place at the top of the SPL once again. Hearts have not mounted the same challenge as last year. This could be blamed to a degree on players eyes possibly being on the off-the-field activities at their club. Collins said: "I'm not saying we'll do this or that to the Old Firm but you must always have dreams in football. If I didn't think we could challenge then I wouldn't have taken the job." Collins has is still basking in the glory of Hibs first League Cup win since 1991. The win over Kilmarnock was a big moment for him. He went on: "It was probably the most satisfying moment in my football career. To win 5-1 in a final surpasses everything. It was the club's first trophy in 16 years and we took 30,000 supporters to Hampden. The Proclaimers are massive Hibs fans. They had tears running down their cheeks."

Collins admits things are not easy for him, as again there will be no money available for transfers this summer. He said: "
I've brought in a few free transfers, trialists and non-contract players. I've let seven go on loan, plus one we sold to Rangers (Kevin Thomson). I just need to get some players in during the summer now, but there's no money to buy anyone. I'm already busy watching players and speaking to contacts, ready for next season. We've got Clayton Donaldson coming from York City on a free. He's got pace, hunger, scores goals and is a great lad."
