A Raer Treat?

Last updated : 06 April 2007 By Alex Horsburgh

This Saturday, Brian Welsh can become only the second Cowdenbeath manager since 1945 to keep the Blue Brazil in a higher division than the basement league for more than one season.

The ex-Dundee United man saw his Fife side go down 3-0 at Morton and 1-0 at Stirling in their last two matches but as far as he is concerned 1-0 should have been the result in both games.

Welsh commented on Thursday: "
Morton and Stirling probably just shaded it against us but 3-0 flattered the Greenock side last Saturday and overall I am happy with the way we approached both these games against the two best teams in Division 2".

Stranraer's disastrous result at home to Alloa on Tuesday (the 'Raer lost 3-4 after leading 3-0 after 18 minutes) means Cowdenbeath stay up if they beat the Wigtownshire blues at Central Park on Saturday. It is now looking likely that Stranraer will face Arbroath, Queens Park and East Fife in a play-off contest if they want to preserve their Div 2 status.

Cowdenbeath hammered Stranraer 6-1 at Stair Park just a couple of Sunday's ago and time is almost up for Gerry Britton's side who have seen their inability to start the first or second half of matches well cost them dear. Alloa pulled it back to 3-2 in the first minute of the second half on Tuesday after 'Raer made their best start to a game this season. They also saw Cowden's Pat Clarke net a hat trick in the first ten minutes against them when they were crushed 6-1 by the Fifers.

Last time Stranraer visited Central Park in the league they lost 4-2.

Laurie Ellis is a doubt for Cowden on Saturday while Stranraer have no injury worries at this stage in what is last chance saloon time for them. Forfar have looked doomed since the start of March but will be officially relegated if the cannot win at the weekend or Stranraer get three points at Cowdenbeath.
