Scotland March On

Scotland progressed into the second round of the UEFA Under 19 Championship with a 2-0 win over Macedonia at Hamilton last night. However, Turkey topped the group on goal difference after beating the Faroe Islands 5-0.

Scotland got off to a great start in 11 minutes, when a Ross Wallace cross was forced over by David Clarkson, with the unintentional assistance of defender Toni Dzangarovski. Scotland continued to dominate the match but a large number of promising moves broke down in the box, with good chances missed by Low, Adam, Baxter, Clarkson and Brown. In the second half, the Macedonians, who needed to win to progress, came storming back and put the Scotland goal under pressure. A fine 30 yard effort from Limanov was tipped onto the bar by Andy Reid. However, in the final minute, Scott Brown made the game safe with a shot from the edge of the box. Macedonian defender Vance Sikov was sent off for a second yellow card shortly afterwards, and four of his colleagues were also booked. Round two is to be played in the spring of next year. Scotland will have to be much sharper in front of goal if they are to reach the tournament finals.
