Scotland's women made history by beating Russia but it was just not good enough.

Scotland's women returned from Russia with the often felt feeling of 'so near and yet so far' that follows the national side around. Despite recording a 4-4 scoreline for the tie, Scotland lost out on the away goals rule. Pauline Hamill will feel most aggrieved as it was she who scored all the goals.

National coach was Anna Signeul downcast after the first leg but was even more gutted for her side that beat Russia for the first time in their history. She said: "I have never felt so disappointed after winning a game. But I am so proud of these players, they have achieved so much to get to this point. I think we dominated the game from start to finish and showed tremendous spirit, even when we went one down and knew that we needed to score three. We took a bit of a chance in the second half letting Russia come at us, but we needed goals and we so nearly got the right result. I think it's a tremendous achievement for us to have played so well over two games against such a strong side, and I can't say enough how proud I am of this group of players."
