More news of expectations on the shoulders of the Spanish national side and manager
There was a funeral in the village today, preceded yesterday by posters around town asking for quiet from all in the village between 3.00 and 5.30 pm. The funeral cortege passed our house - a funeral car bedecked in flowers, followed by around 200 people on foot in silent tribute, it was very moving. The procession gathered more mourners as it passed each road on the way to the cemetery. There was a similar mourning following the international friendly this week between Spain and France, well not exactly mourning, more moaning. Moaning in the sense that the draw achieved should have been a victory and to prove it the TV channels here have all focussed on the near misses, (for Spain) showing them from every possible angle except of course from in the net! The attitude is that as Spain’s league is so rich and as their footballers are so talented surely they should win when faced with what the view as a fading French team. Like every league that has big money the teams attract the best players but not all are from the native country so there is a bit of a miss match in perception when some gifted players seen every week playing for Spanish clubs return home to play for their national side. This does not leave the Spanish side bereft of skill, far from it but as with all national sides it takes a tournament to bring out the best in them, a sequence of games weeks sometimes months apart are no test of quality or blend. Perhaps that is why the fans here as I mentioned in a previous bulletions do not take the tournaments seriously until their side reach the quarter finals. It is that period of blending learning and teaming that decides whether the Manager’s skill in assessing the team needs and required responses proves correct. You can be sure that if he gets it badly wrong and wrong again there will be another funeral planned in Spain, with one funeral car and no followers. |
