Never shy of offering an opinion, Gary Caldwell looks back at the change of Scotland manager
Looking back, Wigan and Scotland defender Gary Caldwell believes George Burley's sacking as national manager was "for the good of the country". While Caldwell has every sympathy, on a personal level, with Burley the former Celtic man, who joined the Latics this month, insists a change had to be made. Burley was sacked by the SFA in November following a 3-0 defeat in Wales
Caldwell said: "In the end, it must have been a relief for George to go. The media scrutiny on him must have been tough and some of the stuff written about George was out of order. But some Scotland fans turned on him when we lost the friendly to Wales and punters tend to get their way. Results weren't good enough and the players need to take a close look at ourselves for that. However, it was for the good of the country that there was a change of manager."
Caldwell is now looking forward to working with new boss Craig Levein during the upcoming European Championship qualifying campaign. He said: "I've spoken to Barry Robson and Paul Hartley, who played for Levein at United and Hearts. They've only had great things to say. If you look at Craig's track record, it's easy to see why the SFA appointed him. I hope he can lead us to a finals. From what I'm told, he's the type of manager you want to play for and that's important. He's a no-nonsense type and will have the squad's respect."
