Cowdenbeath FC have a unique connection to WW 1 and WW 2. At the start of both conflicts the East of Scotland side had just enjoyed a promotion but were not put up for election to a higher league in 1914/15 due to the outbreak of hostilities.

1939 saw Cowdenbeath win promotion automatically as Second Division Champions with Alloa as runners-up but after the Fifers played only six matches in the then top division in Scotland (Division One) the competition was closed down after Hitler's invasion of Poland in September 1939.

After the resumption of the league in 1945/6 Cowden's 1939 promotion was deemed null and void and the club would have to wait until 1970 before they had a team fit enough to win promotion to the top flight again. The 1969/70 side finished runners-up to Champions Falkirk to end 'Beath's long wait in the wilderness.
