Who Is Number Two On Rangers' List

Last updated : 07 December 2017 By ed_ScottishFitba

As Derek McInnes has decided to stay with his current employers and not leave the Aberdeen manager's job at the moment, does that show a lack of ambition?  Rangers were the latest club to try to persuade McInnes that it would be the best time to take his next step on his managerial career. The Ibrox club have been looking for a new manager since Pedro Caixinha was sacked six weeks ago.  The Portuguese manager has managed to find a new job with Mexican club Cruz Azul which are midway through their Liga MX season. Rangers have not been so lucky within the same period.  The Rangers board have a list of candidates but will have to draw a line through McInnes' name. For now.

Many thought McInnes was Caixinha's natural successor being a former player at Ibrox and all. He had rebuffed the approaches from Sunderland in July of this year and secured a new deal at Pittiodrie until 2020.  Should McInnes be chastised for not listening to the Siren's call from Glasgow or congratulated for waiting for another club to offer to match his ambition?  Would it have been a sign of a lack of ambition by moving within Scotland? Many questions but few answers.  Most players plying their trade in Scotland have ambitions to play in England.  Most managers also appear to have their eyes on opportunities that crop up next door.  McInnes could well be waiting for a bigger club from down south to match the valuation Aberdeen have in mind to allow a conversation with their manager.

Rangers are undoubtedly a big club but compared to the finances available down south thanks to Sky money, the attraction may not be a good as it used to be.  The well documented financial problems at Ibrox would also have played a part in McInnes decision to stay with the devil he knows. So, the saga continues; who will be Rangers manager and who can attract McInnes away from Aberdeen.
