A 1926/27 Scottish League Championship winners medal won by, Rangers and Scotland footballing legend, Alan Morton will be the star attraction in one of the most highly anticipated Scottish sports memorabilia auctions in recent years. Morton, whose nickname was the 'Wee Blue Devil', won a record 31 Scottish caps at a time when international football consisted largely of games against the other home nations. Morton played 11 times against England, notably in the famous 'Wembley Wizards' team of 1928 which beat England 5-1.
The medal, which is expected to fetch in the region of £2,200, is one of fourteen 'Wee Blue Devil' lots in the McTears auction on 5 December, which together represent some of the rarest sports memorabilia ever to come to auction in Scotland. Other Alan Morton lots in the sale include another League Championship medal from 1924/25 which has an estimate of between £1,000 and £1,500, a Glasgow Cup 1931/32 winners medal valued at between £1,000 and £1,500, and two of the players Scotland jerseys from 1924 which could fetch up to £1,500 each.
Commenting on the sale Brian Clements, McTear’s Director said: "The Wee Blue Devil’ was the first of Scotland’s footballing superstars and is regarded by many as Rangers’ greatest ever player. The various lots give a fascinating account of Alan Morton’s impressive Rangers and Scotland career and I am sure the memorabilia will attract a huge amount of interest. To have one ‘Wee Blue Devil’ item in the sale would be fantastic but to have 14 lots is quite unprecedented." When Morton’s playing career finished he was invited to join the Board at Rangers and his time in the corridors of power is represented in the auction with several Director’s lapel badges. The player’s Rangers cap is also for sale and there is even an Alan Morton inscribed silver cigarette case. All of the 'Wee Blue Devil' items are being put for auction by someone from the Morton family.
In addition to the Alan Morton lots the auction will also include a range of other rare memorabilia including a 1924 Partick Thistle v Rangers match ticket, a 1967 European Cup Final match programme and an collection of 1950s/60s football correspondence relating to Scottish referee David Weir’s time as a match official. The auction will take place at McTear’s Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, Meiklewood Gate, Glasgow on Saturday 5th December at 10.30am.
