Title Decider?

Can a game in early in January determine just where the SPL title will end up in May?

Celtic meet Rangers today at Parkhead with a 12:30 kick-off. The weather may be a factor but the atmosphere will be red-hot as the home side try to reduce the seven point gap down to four between first and second in the SPL. There is a chance that new signing from FC Seoul, Ki Sung-Yueng, will be on the bench for the game but it is expected that Gary Caldwell will be back from suspension. Celtic defender Danny Fox, signed from Coventry in the summer, missed out on the trip to Ibrox in October with a hamstring injury and sat in the Broomloan Road stand with the away fans as the visitors lost 2-1 to their bitter rivals. Today he will get to l experience an Old Firm derby from a different perspective.
Having recovered to re-establish himself in the left-back position, the Scotland defender cannot wait for the lunchtime kick-off to come around. He said: "When I signed for Celtic, the Old Firm game was one of the first fixtures I looked for and to get injured in the game before it against Rapid Vienna was bitterly disappointing. I was gutted, but it has come around again quite quickly and I am looking forward to it. I have been to a few derbies, like Manchester United v Manchester City and Everton v Liverpool, but the atmosphere at Ibrox was pretty special. It was a lot louder than I expected and very passionate. The game was played at 100mph but I thought the football played by both teams was brilliant. I watched the game in the away end with the Celtic fans and it was a good experience, especially the first 15 minutes. The Celtic fans were going crazy until, obviously, we went 2-0 down. They went a bit quiet then but, when Aiden McGeady scored the penalty, it was lifted again. So it was a great experience but obviously I would have preferred to be out on the pitch. I haven't played in anything like that but, as a footballer, you have to be prepared to play in every type of game. So I'm looking forward to it."

Rangers will not have striker Kenny Miller (suspended) or Nacho Novo and Sasa Papac (sickness bug), while Kevin Thomson, DaMarcus Beasley and Steven Naismith are likely to remain on the sidelines. Madjid Bougherra will also miss out after joining up with the rest of the Algeria squad ahead of the African Nations Cup, paving the way for Danny Wilson's return to the first team. One player who is expected to make the game is Steven Davis. He admits moving 10 points clear of Celtic would hand Rangers a massive advantage in the race for the SPL title. The Scottish champions are determined to start the new year the way they ended 2009 - with another emphatic victory which would pile the pressure on their arch-rivals. Davis said: "It'd be massive for us. We know there's obviously a lot of pressure going into any Old Firm game. We've managed to get ourselves into a good position but there's still a long way to go in the season. I think if we go to Parkhead and get a good result, that'll stand us in good stead. We've been playing really well recently and managed to put together a great run of results and are scoring goals. It obviously puts us into a great position going into the Old Firm game and we just have to try to maintain that run."
Kris Boyd stole the show with five goals in midweek as Rangers cruised to a 7-1 win over Dundee United. But with 26 scored by the team as a whole in December, goals are coming from all over the park. Asked what has changed in the last few weeks, Davis replied: "It's basics really; it's just hard work. Everyone's working hard for the team off the ball. On the ball as well, we're making movements for each other and creating chances. The boys have been spreading them out amongst the team and putting them away. It's just great that we go into the Old Firm game on the back of a good run of form and it's just about maintaining that now."
