Yes, 'Shire woz robbed on Saturday and yes Cowdenbeath can count themselves lucky to be in the Div 2 Play-Off final against Stenhousemuir but Blue Brazilians everywhere will point to some instant karma. Now, can Cowden take a stenny stairlift to heaven?
If you are an East Stirlingshire fan you may firstly answer "No" and then "Yes" to the rest of of the above but what is done is done and it is a Div 2 Play-Off final between the two sides that have the Brigadoon factor down south. English Groundhoppers galore are sure to join Cowden and Stenny faithful for both legs of their promotion showdown. It is a glamour game for the football anoraks at least. It's doubtful there has ever been so important a match(es) between these two perennial minnows of Scottish fitba'. Cowdenbeath have never been a team to get many breaks as previous articles on this site have testified. Blue Brazilians will take Saturday's controversial winner with little guilt as they have seen many injustices visited upon their side over the years. Clear penalties denied late on against both then-Premier League Partick (1978) and Hibs (1993) that would have surely produced giantkilling acts for the Fifers in the SFA Cup will be the first two bits of bad karma that will come to most long suffering Cowden fans minds when you mention "they were lucky" on Saturday. Andy Rolland contrived to miss his first penalty that season for Cowden after an almost perfect record from the spot in both spells with the 'Beath on the final day of the 1980/1 season. That miss cost Cowden the point they needed for promotion as Queens Park won 2-1 at Central Park. 'Shire themselves cost Cowden promotion in 1975/6 in a controversial match which ironically saw two Cowden players sent off after a controversial Bobby McCulley goal at Central Park caused the same consternation for Fifers as the equaliser did for the 'Shire faithful at the weekend. Add 30 seconds from beating Rangers in a League Cup Quarter Final tie in 1949 (Rangers equalised with the last kick then won it in extra time) and 'Shire denying Cowden a Quarter Final with Celtic in the SFA Cup in the 1980's with two late goals in a 2-1 4th Round win at Central Park and it is clear why Cowden fans feel their side have paid their dues so they could enjoy Saturday's slice of luck. | |||
