| Competition for place is good for all teams as it keeps players on the toes to give of their best.

On a high after their 8-2 Europa League aggregate win, Motherwell are not about to think they are world beaters and can relax with the players they have. Manager Jim Gannon galvanised his team on Thursday to win the tie with ease but he still wants competition within his squad for places to avoid complacency. That is why he has signed Everton goalkeeper John Ruddy on loan, with the option of a permanent move to Fir Park. Ruddy signed on until January 2010 and will compete with Michael Fraser for the number one jersey. Ruddy joins in time to be registered for the next Europa League qualifier against Steaua Bucharest. Gannon knows Ruddy well having twice signed him on loan for Stockport.
The 6ft 4in keeper made only one substitute appearance for Everton since joining in a £250,000 deal from Cambridge United in 2005. The former England under-19 international has gained experience during loan spells at Rushden & Diamonds, Chester, Wrexham, Bristol City and Crewe. Completing the signing before Friday night's European deadline means Gannon can add one wild card player to his squad before next Thursday's first leg of the third qualifying round in Romania. | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
