Romania Get Backing From The North

Points mean prizes for Inverness Caledonian Thistle as Romanian progress results in cash for the Highland club.
Inverness Caledonian Thistle will be cheering on Romania against Holland in EURO2008 to enable them to collect and unexpected windfall. By having Marius Niculae in Romania's squad for the finals Inverness will be receiving a cheque from UEFA for the time he has been involved in the finals. Earlier this year FIFA and UEFA agreed to pay compensation to clubs whose players appear at major tournaments, and Inverness will collect £3,000 per day from UEFA as long as Romania remain in the competition. So far Niculae and his teammates have drawn with both France and Italy in Group C. Should Romania beat favourites Holland, they will join the Dutch in the quarter-finals. They could also progress on the back of a draw if the meeting of the World Cup finalists between Italy and France finishes goalless meaning both fancied sides packing their bags. With Holland bound to top Group C, the runners-up will go on to face the winners of Group D in Vienna on Sunday, June 22.
Inverness manager Craig Brewster will be looking forward to the increase in his transfer budget as a result of the EURO2008 windfall, which will mean a lot more to a club like Caley Thistle than such extra funds would at a larger club. Brewster has already started planning for next season and is waiting for an answer from striker target ex-Ross County man Andrew Barrowman. Free free agent Barrowman was offered a deal by Inverness but has also been the subject of interest from other clubs. Anybody scoring 29 goals in a season will attract interest. Barrowman could become a replacement for Niculae, whose salary scale may mean he moves on after EURO2008. Barrowman said: "I know that Caley Thistle want me and I can understand where they're coming from, but I've got to look after myself and it wouldn't worry me if they decided to start looking elsewhere. It has probably dragged on longer than even I would have liked. However, I have to be sure that whatever I decide it's the right move for me." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
