Reflections On Hughes Appointment
Updated Friday, 12th June 2009
A personal view of the appointment of John Hughes from the editor of Hibs-mad
When I first heard that John 'Yogi' Hughes had got the hot seat at Easter Road I thought to myself, typical, another ex player that's been appointed 'cause he's a cheap option and would appease the fans. No excitement from me, but more relief that we had someone in place sooner rather than later.
Now a few days later and after hearing what John had to say I have to admit to being a little more than just happy that he has been installed. He's came over as someone who knows what he wants, what he's got at his disposal and what he wants to deliver and he's ticking all the right boxes for this Hibby.
He can certainly 'talk the talk' but only time will tell if he can 'walk the walk' and he does sound like a man who has ample man management skills which are a big requirement in this day and age for the position he now fills.
He did have Falkirk playing some decent football and all on a shoestring budget, £120,000 spent over 5 years I believe, and it'll be interesting to see what he and Brian Rice can do with a bigger albeit not huge budget at Hibs. His playing philosophy of attractive, on the deck footy, is also a big big part of what the Hibs support expect and it's something we lacked under Mixu for some reason and the fans were very quick to point this out on the various Hibs forums including my own 'Hibs-mad' sites board.
I'm sure he has a soft side though and the players will be hoping that is the side they see the most but woo betide any of them that step out of line or start to drag their feet as big Yogi will come down on them like a ton of bricks IMHO.
To cut to the point I'm now a very happy Hibby who is once again looking forward to the new season and the general feeling of Hibs fans on the Hibs-mad board is very similar to my thoughts above.
Welcome home Yogi, now get ready to kick some butt ;o)
