C:WindowsTempphpCDC6.tmpManager Alex Rae like everybody else at St Mirren can't wait for the opening league game, against Morton, after the fixtures for the 2016/17 Championship season were announced. The Saints start their season at home to Renfrewshire rivals Morton on 6 August. Rae said: "It’s a great way to start off the season. I’m sure it’s a game that the staff, the players and everyone associated with the club will relish. There will be a good crowd and a good atmosphere and hopefully we can get the season off to a good start."

The players return for pre-season training this week and Rae confirmed that he is still trying to add to his squad ahead of the League Cup tie against Livingston on the 16 July. He went on: "We’re still working on a number of targets but the marketplace isn’t flooded with talent at the moment. It can be frustrating but there isn’t much you can do about it. We have about 14 players under contract at the moment so we’re certainly looking to add to that before the season gets underway."

Chief Executive Tony Fitzpatrick was delighted with the opening day game and thinks it’s a game that will capture the imagination of the fans. He said: "We couldn’t have asked for any better, especially at home as well which is fantastic. The fixtures are very exciting with our first two home games coming against Morton and Hibs. They are big games and I’m really looking forward to it. I’d love St Mirren supporters to really come out en masse for the first game – let’s make it a full house."
