St Mirren failed to deliver a second hand performance to match that of Dunfermline and drop out of the CIS Cup.
Perhaps St Mirren should have dug deeper into their resources when they tried to sign Jim McIntyre which may have meant they avoided last night's 2-0 loss in the CIS Cup. As we wrote yesterday, St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson attempted to sign the now Dunfermline manager McIntyre but could not match the financial package on offer from the Fife side. After the game MacPherson was critical of his team's "shocking" second-half display. Goals within five second-half minutes by Simon Wiles and Graham Bayne handed Dunfermline a third-round win at East End Park. MacPherson said: "The second half was shocking. We were reasonably comfortable first half. But the second half... Sometimes you ask questions and don't get answers. There were a couple of balls into the box and we didn't deal with them." There was one moment of controversy not long before the opening goal when Jim Hamilton was felled by Greg Shields in the Dunfermline box as he chased a long ball. Despite claims for a penalty, referee Calum Murray waved play on. MacPherson said: "I thought from where we were, there was certainly contact. I asked the linesman and he said there was no contact with the ball. But we're not going to blame anybody apart from ourselves for a second-half performance like that."
Graham Bayne had opened the scoring for the home side with a header into the top corner from 16 yards. However, Pars boss McIntyre praised substitute Wiles, who lashed the ball in off the bar following a corner from Kevin Harper in the 74th-minute to secure the win. McIntyre said: "I thought he gave us a wee lift. He injected a bit of pace, which was much needed, and popped up with a goal. It was a good team performance. The defence was excellent and the midfield worked their socks off. And what a header from Graham Bayne." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
