No Favours In The SPL

Jim Jeffries has a soft spot for Falkirk but that will be ignored tomorrow as his side need the three points on offer just as much as the opposition.
Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies is not willing to allow bottom club Falkirk to record their first league win of 2009-10 this weekend. Eddie May's side are bottom of the SPL with just two points to show for the efforts in five league games and are out of the Co-Operative Insurance Cup thanks to Celtic on Wednesday night. However, things could change if the Bairns managed to win tomorrow as the three points could take them above eighth-placed Kilmarnock, who are still looking to repeat the result from the opening-day against Hamilton.
Jefferies, a former manager of the Bairns, said: "It can go two ways for Falkirk. The obvious thing is that it makes them more determined to get that win to get the monkey off their back, as they say. But there does come the pressure of getting that win the longer the run goes. I hope they get it but I hope it's the week after we play them. We will just be looking after ourselves, making sure we play well and if we do that then we can jump up a couple of places. The league is tight. I thought we could have won at Tynecastle when we played Hearts the other week and a win that night would have put us fourth in the league. We could go seventh or we can go bottom against Falkirk depending on the score so we have to make sure that we are doing our best to get seventh."
Kilmarnock did not do much better in the Co-Operative Insurance Cup as they lost to St Mirren on Tuesday at home. However, Jefferies stressed that his priority, as ever, is to have his team concentrate on staying in the SPL. He said: "We wanted a cup run, there's no doubt about that but staying in the SPL is the most important thing. We are still not deviating from our thoughts that if we can get the breaks and get everyone fit, then we will try to get into the top six and we will never give up on that. But the most important thing is that we remain in the SPL." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
