Alan Gow motherwellMotherwell progressed to their first League Cup semi final since 2006 thanks to a late goal from Alan Gow in a close encounter at Fir Park. The game never reached the heights of the League game between the two sides on Saturday, but this was no more than Well boss Craig Brown expected: “When you play each other in the space of two or three days the teams tend to cancel each other out. Tonight’s game was a bit of a stalemate and was a very even game.” His counterpart Peter Houston felt Motherwell deserved to win on Saturday but felt his side were worth something from tonight’s tie: “I don’t think Motherwell deserved to win tonight, I honestly thought the game was heading to extra time. I am a bit frustrated and disappointed. I don’t think we deserved to go out as for spells in the second half we were the better side, after an even first half.

The game almost started brightly for the home side once again, a sweeping move in the 6th minute, involving Tom Hateley, Chris Humphrey and Alan Gow ended with a Jamie Murphy cross just missed by the supporting strikers at the back post. Motherwell had the bulk of possession and made a couple more chances before the break. A Murphy pass was met by Gow by his shot was well saved by Dusan Pernis, and then the keeper was forced to save from a 25 yard shot from Nick Blackman. The only effort United had to show in the opening period was an angled drive from Paul Dixon was which was well saved by Darren Randolph. The rebound reached Scott Robertson but he was denied by a well timed Steve Jennings tackle.

The second half saw Motherwell create more chances with Blackman coming close on a couple of occasions. The stalemate was finally broken in the 87th minute, Garry Kenneth shanked a clearance wide for a corner. From Hateley’s kick Prince Bauben sliced a clearance off the post and the ball fell kindly for Gow to smash home from close range. Well boss Brown knows there is more to come from his team: “
I am not too displeased but I know we can do better, and we showed enough fight and were willing to compete.”
