Money Shmunny, The Cup Is The Prize

St Mirren players will be looking for the silverware rather than the silver for their pockets come Sunday
stmirren jpegSt Mirren's bonus situation continues to rumble on but manager Manager Gus MacPherson is confident all his players will be think off on Sunday will be winning the Co-operative Insurance Cup. The Buddies take on Rangers on Sunday with a slight sour taste in the mouths. You may remember that the Saints players were at odds with the board after reportedly being given less money for beating Hearts in the semi-final than for beating Motherwell in the previous round. With reaching the final there will be another bonus due to the players. However, it is understood there was little room for negotiation over bonuses for Sunday's game. MacPherson is sure the players will only be focused on football in the build-up to the Hampden final. The St Mirren manager said: "It's a situation we could have done without but it was there before the semi-final so no questions can be asked of the players' professionalism. The game on Sunday will take care of itself. Bonus issues will have no effect on the performance. Win, lose or draw, players will be completely focused on their job."

MacPherson and his Kilmarnock team-mates overcame a bonus row ahead of their 1997 Scottish Cup win and he knows glory and success are all the motivation his players really need. MacPherson said: "I remember the bonus issue we had as well. There was a bit of in-house fighting there. But we're in the game to win and there's no greater feeling in professional sport than winning, and that's what we're striving to do on Sunday."

As captain, John Potter had the responsibility to put the players' points of view to the board but he is happy to put the issue behind him for now. The defender said: "We've forgotten about it this week. It's been and done. We've spoken about it in the past. As players we are only concentrating on our preparation and being professional for this cup final. We just have to get on with it and try to win this cup final for St Mirren."
