Managers complain of inconsistency from officials and Dundee United are considering and appeal against what they consider to be a harsh red card.

Dundee United boss Craig Levein is considering an appeal against Danny Swanson's sending-off at St Johnstone. However, before he makes up his mind he wants to talk to SFA referees chief Hugh Dallas for his views on the tackle that brought out the red card. United midfielder Swanson was sent off in Saturday's 3-2 win at McDiarmid Park for a deliberate trip on Gavin Swankie. While United accept the challenge warranted a card, they remain stunned that referee Dougie McDonald produced one of the red variety. Levein claims McDonald informed him after the game that a clampdown on such tackles had been ordered by the SFA.

The United boss was planning to speak to SFA head of refereeing development Dallas to confirm whether that was the case. Levein said: "
I'm going to speak to Hugh and see if he has seen the tackle - if he hasn't, I'll ask him to have a look and get back to us. If he says it falls within the new guidelines, there is no point in us appealing. But, if he thinks we could have a case, we will appeal."
