Jure Out On Saints Progress

stmirren jpegSt Mirren defender Jure Travner believes his side's long-awaited second league win of the season can be the start of an improved run of results. Travner scored in injury time to make the score 2-1 over Aberdeen which gave Danny Lennon's side three points for the first time since August and moved them off the bottom of the table. Travner said: "Moments like this can really help teams perform better and I hope we can do that. We were really unlucky last week as every mistake was punished by conceding a goal - we deserved this win because we've trained really hard and I hope this is a good step for us. I didn't realise quite how late it was when I scored; I just ran and hoped it would be the winner, and when the referee blew the whistle I was so happy. Earlier in the game I'd had a similar chance when I tried to pass to Michael Higdon or Gareth Wardlaw but the pass was blocked, and I thought that if I got another chance I'd shoot. Paul McGowan passed the ball through to me and I tried to get in front of the Aberdeen player to make a penalty, but he didn't and I was able to finish. This will be really good for our confidence; there isn't a lot of difference between teams as a number are really close in the league table. St Mirren is a really good team with great players and staff - I feel quite settled here and my aims are to get better and progress as a player and to help the team stay in the league."

aberdeenAberdeen failed to make it three in a row in a week in which they had beaten Hibs in the league and reached the League Cup semi-finals thanks to a similar injury-time winner against Falkirk. The game looked to be heading the a draw after Rory McArdle's second-half strike cancelled out Marc McAusland's opener. However, the intervention of Travner changed that. Pittodrie forward Chris Maguire said: "
We're unhappy - it was a harsh finish. We didn't start too well but in the second half I thought we were going to go on and win it. We did what we had done in midweek by coming out fighting, taking the game to St Mirren and putting them on the back foot, so we got ourselves back in it. Once we got the goal I thought we'd go on and win, and even late on I thought we were going to hold out for a draw and take a point, but a wee lack of concentration has cost us. We wanted to win; we knew they weren't in great form at the moment but that counts for nothing really, and it just kept breaking down when we tried to get through on goal - in the second half we came out fighting and were unlucky." Next stop for the Dons will be Parkhead, and Maguire went on: "We'll start the hard work at training on Monday - we have a massive game ahead and it won't be easy, but hopefully we can go out there and give a strong performance."
