Is The End Nigh For Livingston?

Dark clouds of debt are hanging over Almondvale Stadium and the club are in danger of going under.
Livingston could be no more soon if they are put into administration later this week which is increasingly likely. West Lothian Council turned down a £500,000 rescue bid from former Dumbarton chairman Neil Rankine. The council started legal preceding almost 13 days ago after Livingston chairman Angelo Massone failed to find almost £300,000 in back rent for Almondvale Stadium. The legal process is expected to reach the Court of Session tomorrow (Thursday). Despite efforts to raise funds from fans and other potential investors, Massone has failed to find a viable solution to the clubs problem which he would find acceptable. The Italian owns a 76 per cent stake in the club and is looking for at least £500,000 to relinquish control. Rankine's deal would be on the basis that his total offer of £500,000 would allow all debtors to get something back before the administrator take over the club. By Rankine's calculations Livingston owe at least £1.35million. Club sources suggest there is no money, no goodwill with creditors and very few tangible assets. Rankine said: "I am waiting to see what happens until the deadline, with time running out." Rankine is willing to invest £250,000 in the club but wants it to be run by the fans. The other £250,000 will come from other investors.
The council are playing the "no comment" card as they are following the legal process. However, it appears they are tired of listening to promises from Massone and are wary of accepting a rescue package from a new set of businessmen who are yet to be properly confirmed. The club had to play its first pre-season friendly of the season behind closed doors on Saturday, a 0-0 draw with Falkirk, because of failure to secure a safety certificate from the police. One of the reasons is believed to be the dispute with Scottish Power over a bill of £32,000. It is understood that another £10,000 is due to the power company to cover legal costs along with an advance payment against the next bill. The club's friendly with Plymouth Argyle at Almondvale on Monday is now in doubt. |
