Investigation Finished By Christmas? I Wouldn't Bet On It

Steve jenningsThe SFA have not made much progress in the investigation into the alleged betting patterns that a red card would be shown in the game between Motherwell and Hearts. The SFA and SPL were contacted by the Association of British Bookmakers (ABB) after bets were placed on the prospect of a red card being shown to someone during the game. One was shown to Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings in the 83rd minute for comments made to referee Stevie O'Reilly. The ABB alert was sparked by two bookmakers reporting unusual betting patterns, with Blue Square preventing one new customer placing any more money on his initial £200 bet that a Motherwell player would see a red card at odds of 10-1. The ABB passed their information to the Scottish football authorities and the Gambling Commission and expected some clarification on the issue before Christmas.

However, SFA chief executive Stewart Regan said: "At this stage it is still at the early fact-finding stages. A lot of allegations have been made and a lot of noise been made within the press and at this stage, given that there is a live case going on, it is inappropriate for us to comment any further. But we are investigating and trying to clarify the facts and, when there is something to say, we will be able to make a much more fuller comment."

One report today claimed Jennings could be suspended indefinitely in lieu of an investigation being completed or that Motherwell could be urged to put the midfielder on gardening leave. The club refused to comment on the issue but it is believed they would reject any such request. Jennings is already suspended for three games as a result of the red card and going through the 18-point disciplinary mark for the second consecutive season.
