If You Know Your History....

On loan goalkeeper Andrew Stobie hopes that an extended run in the Scottish Cup and regular football with Edinburgh City can see him break into parent club East Fife’s first team next season.

City face Threave Rovers on Saturday in the second round and 19 year old Stobie, who joined on loan at the start of the season, hopes the experience of playing in the East of Scotland Premier Division and in the Scottish Cup can provide him with the chance to stake a claim for the number one jersey at East Fife.

He said: ''Playing for Edinburgh City has provided me with good experience and obviously playing in very important games in the Scottish Cup, is great from a personal point of view. I’m getting a lot of games under my belt with City and it’s great experience for me. Hopefully, if I have a good season, I will have a chance of breaking into the East Fife first team. I’ve been on loan to junior clubs over the last two seasons and I’m now with Edinburgh City in the East of Scotland Premier Division. I hope that, if I keep doing what I’m doing, I will get my chance eventually.''

Edinburgh City were founded in 1928 although the initial incarnation ceased to be in mid-1950s. The club had aimed to become the capital equivalent of Queens Park, and similarly joined the SFL as an amateur club in 1931. The Edinburgh City Football Club Ltd (Social Club), which had continued throughout the abeyance of the football side itself, gave their approval in 1986 to local side Postal United allowing them to use the Edinburgh City name.

The most celebrated Edinburgh City victory was beating Hibs 3–2 away at Easter Road in the First Round of the SFA Cup on 22 January 1938. Milne missed a penalty with 5 minutes to go for the home side. In the next round they lost 9–2 away to Raith Rovers on 9 February 1938.

They remained a league member until 1949 when financial considerations forced a switch to Junior status, and they were wound up in 1955.
