It may get cold in Aberdeen but not as cold as the water in a river in Austria.

Despite not being able to call on the facilities available at Pittodrie, new Aberdeen manager, Mark McGhee, is making best use of the Austrian surrounding in getting his squad ready for the 2009-10 SPL season. With ice-baths popular with coaching staff - less so with sportsmen and women - for post training recovery, McGhee is sure his players don't miss out by utilising the ice-cold river that flows past their training camp at Obertraun. As the source of the river is on an Austrian mountain, there is no need to check if the water is cold enough for the required recovery benefits to be delivered. The impact of the cold water is good for the muscles and what is good for the players is good for the manager as he is first into the water.

McGhee said: "The ice stream is not a gimmick. It's supposed to be practical. Every day at home when they finish training they go into iced baths so it's a shortcut to that. It's flowing water and helps their muscles. You feel great when you come out of there - at least I felt great when I came out of there. It's just getting in that's the problem. The water comes down from the glacier on the mountain."
