Cowdenbeath FC make their pre-season plans and it is back to work this week for the team just pipped for promotion to Division 2 last season by Stenhousemuir in a play-off final that finished in a penalty shoot-out.
It was back to work for the Blue Brazil this week as the squad returned for regular pre-season training on Tuesday and Thursday night. The squad also took part in a double session over the weekend at Beath High School playing fields and new signing Gareth Wardlaw joined up with his new team mates along with Kenny Adamson and Brian Fairbairn, who have both recovered from their respective injuries that forced the pair to miss the end of last season. Danny Lennon said: "It has been a short break for us but it was great to get back out on the training field. The boys have looked after themselves and are in good spirits. I am still looking to add to the squad and have targets in mind. In addition, we will have a number of triallists training with us over the summer."
The pre-season friendly programme kicks off on Saturday with a run out against Partick Thistle at Peffermill. Three further games have been fixed up and Lennon is hoping to confirm two more fixtures shortly.
Cowdenbeath v Partick Thistle, Saturday 4th July @2pm, Peffermill (Edinburgh University playing fields), Cupar Hearts v Cowdenbeath, Date and kick off to be confirmed. Lothian Thistle v Cowdenbeath XI, Wednesday 22nd July @7.15pm, Saughton Astro Cowdenbeath v St. Johnstone, Tuesday 28th July @7.30pm, Central Park
Lennon will also take his squad to St. Andrews for a weekend training camp in mid July as the preparations for the new season - which starts on Saturday 25th July with a visit to face Peterhead in the 1st round of the MG ALBA CUP - hot up.
Cowdenbeath Chairman Jim Methven has resigned with "personal reasons" being cited for his departure. Methven was in the hot seat in the Cowden Boardroom for just over 12 months and was instrumental in trying to bring the need for a new ground for the club to public attention at the turn of the year.
A few Cowden fans raised an eyebrow when Methven was spotted alongside Manager Danny Lennon in the Dugout during the last couple of games of last season but it is still unclear whether the enthusiastic Blue Brazil Chairman was taking the Newcastle Utd owner's love of wearing the club shirt in the stand a step further or was actually influencing the coaching staff !!
Cowden start their League campaign with the 'other' Kincardine Bridge Derby. The Pars v The Bairns is now a well recognised local derby of sorts but Blue Brazil- 'shire rivalries have just as much 'previous' as Dunfermline's jousts with Falkirk. Cowden finished their regular season campaign last year v the former Firs Park side and then defeated them over two legs in a promotion play-off semi final.
Now it's straight back to a game v 'Shire at Ochilview on the opening Saturday of the 2009/10 3rd Division campaign. | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
