Jim Jeffries thought there was light at the end of the tunnel ahead of last night's game with Celtic but his hopes of being able to name Jose Concalves in his side were dashed at the last minute.

Hearts manager Jim Jeffries is still frustrated by the fight he is having with defender Jose Goncalves over a new contract. Goncalves has yet to decide whether or not he wants to accept another contract offer from the club. Jeffries is holding the player to ransom and says he will not play him until he signs a new deal which is why he was left out of last night's 2-0 defeat at Celtic.

The Tynecastle manager said: "I was really, really confident on Tuesday night. I had expected it all to go through so I felt a bit let down. That shows how difficult it is but I am not giving up hope. I was speaking to him until nine o'clock on Tuesday night, after a day at training and I thought we were very close. I was on the phone since I got up on Wednesday morning until we left and I have been in constant contact with him.  I am trying to understand why he is not signing. The club have made him a tremendous offer and the only loser is Jose, he is the one putting himself out the team."
