| Aberdeen old boy Jim Bett thinks Aberdeen could do a lot worse than meet Fram in their first game in the Europa League |
The third Scottish side in the Europa League, Aberdeen, found out their first opponents yesterday and will be playing Icelandic side Fram or Czech club Sigma Olomouc. Ex-Don Jim Bett lives in Iceland and believes Aberdeen would be favourites to progress from the third qualifying round of the Europa League if Fram overcome the Czech side. Fram play in Reykjavik and look set to be the opposition after holding their hosts to a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Dons legend Bett believes that can only be good news for Mark McGhee's men. Bett - who played for Icelandic sides Valur and KR Reykjavik - said: "It's a good draw for Aberdeen. Travel-wise as well it's quite easy. It looks like they will be playing Fram at the moment as the first game was 1-1 away from home and you would think Fram would have a good chance of going through. They are about eighth in the top division here so, overall, it is a good draw. I think the only problem Aberdeen would have is that Fram have played 10 or 11 games now, they are quite fit. But I'm sure Aberdeen will be the favourites to go through to the next stage."
Fram's league campaign is well under way and they have also overcome Welsh side the New Saints in the Europa League already. Bett said: "I think it would give them a slight advantage. They have played quite a few league games and have played three games in Europe. They play their games at the national stadium, which I think would suit Aberdeen quite well to be honest as it's a big, open park. It's not going to be easy because I remember Hafnarfjordur, the top team here, played Dunfermline a few years ago in the UEFA Cup and they knocked them out. Even if Aberdeen do get Fram, it's not going to be an easy tie but, on paper, it does look like a good one." Asked about the general standard of football in Iceland, Bett said: "It's an average standard. You have three or four of the best teams at the top at the moment. FC Reykjavik are doing well at the moment in Europe, they won their first game 2-0 against a Greek side. It's a fair standard." | Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)
