Forth Bottom

C:WindowsTempphp7A99.tmpIt's too early to panic after two weekends of SPFL action but Scottish football's trap door to non-league football has its first two key holders and this Saturday's clash at Central Park will see both Cowdenbeath and new boys Edinburgh City try to get off the mark after defeats in their opening two League games. Both Gary Jardine at City and the SPFL's youngest boss, Liam Fox at the Blue Brazil, need to stop the rot early and a self styled Forth Bridge Derby sees City in Central Fife for the first time since a 5-0 defeat in the Scottish Cup in season 2003/4 when the Meadowbank based side were still non-league.

The last time Edinburgh's third club showed up in the league was during Cowden's all conquering 1938/39 season when they won old Division Two only to be denied top division status by the start of WW II. When hostilities ceased Cowden's Championship win was declared null and void and they were cast back to the basement not to emerge again until gaining promotion as Runners-Up to Falkirk in 1970.

City were hammered 6-1 at Central Park in 1939 while the old Meadowbank Thistle's first trip to Central Park as a League club in season 1974/5 also resulted in a rout with 'Beath winning 5-0.

City lost 3-2 at home to Forfar in their first league game this season before suffering travel sickness at Elgin and a 3-0 reverse while Cowden lost 1-0 at home to the Highlanders and 4-3 at Forfar in their opening games, results which see these teams top of the table going into weekend three of League action while City and Cowden have it all to do now.

City are back in the Scottish League for the first time since 1955 while Cowden have been a part of the mainstay of the game since 1905 when they beat another Edinburgh team, Leith Athletic, 1-0 in their very first match as members of the Scottish League at North End Park, their home before the move to Central Park nearly 100 years ago.

History will count for nothing when the teams take to the field on August 20th but one of them will have to gain the three points if they don't want to be tagged as early contenders for Lowland League football next season.
