A chance ot buy a portrait said by many to be the definitive image of Jock Stein does not come along that often.

A portrait of Jock Stein by internationally renowned artist, Peter Howson OBE, will form the centrepiece of a major art auction in Glasgow next week. Completed in 1987, the portrait is considered by many to be the definitive likeness of the acclaimed Celtic and Scotland manager and estimates of £4k to £6k have now been placed on the work by specialists at McTear's Auctioneers. The portrait will feature in the McTear's Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on Tuesday 10 November along with an exceptionally rare work influenced by Howson's Bosnian experiences and a brand new painting by the artist of Amy Winehouse. There are also two recent major Howson paintings featuring Robert Burns.

The Jock Stein portrait, which is charcoal and wash, and measures 29.5" by 22", is being put up for sale by a prominent Glasgow collector who has owned the work since it was painted in 1987.

McTear's Director, Brian Clements said: "
Peter Howson's position as one of the country's most influential artists was underlined by the phenomenal interest in our October sale which featured the largest collection of Howson works ever to appear in a single auction. Howson fans will not be disappointed with our next sale which includes a number of very prominent pieces, including the definitive portrait of legendary Celtic manager, Jock Stein."
